Principal Financial Group's History

Principal Financial (then known as Banker's Life) was formed in 1879 by Edward Temple. At that time, policies were sold only to men who led relatively temperate lives. By its tenth year, Principal had $29 million in force policies on the books and had outgrown its offices six times.

The growth of Principal did not slow down or taper off, and in 1978, 100 years later, their assets reached $28 billion. In 1985, due to regulatory restrictions and in order to enter new financial markets, the company officially became known as The Principal Financial Group.

From the early nineties, Principal extended their growth into foreign countries and today they are present in Brazil, China, Chile, India and Mexico among others.
