American Life Insurance Co. (ALICO) is an AIG company and is one of the world's largest international finance companies. According to the company, international diversification is the driving force and strategy behind ALICO's growth and financial strength. ALICO has offices in 55 countries and serves both corporate and individual customers. Hiring local personnel in order to adapt to and satisfy changing local needs, ALICO is an insurance industry leader in many countries. The company provides services ranging from wealth management and retirement planning to life and health insurance. ALICO offers life and non-life insurance policies, as well as accident, group life, health and pension services.

History

ALICO was founded in 1921 in Shanghai, China, by a man named C.V. Starr who went on to found American International Group, more commonly known as AIG. The company was originally named, Asia Life Insurance Co. Up until World War II, ALICO opened offices throughout China and Southeast Asia. When the war brought business to a relative standstill, ALICO turned its insurance operations to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. In 1951, it changed its name to American Life Insurance Company. More recently, ALICO has been working to expand its business in Central Europe and Latin America.

Ratings

The independent rating agency, Moody's, gave ALICO a rating of "Aa2" in 2008. The rating was based on the strength of its brand recognition in places such as Japan, as well as its well-established business in more than 50 global markets.
