AIG SunAmerica Life Assurance Co. offers retirement services to people 45 and over. One of the top issuers of variable annuities, AIG SunAmerica is focused on guaranteeing its customers income for life and asset protection that are relatively safe from market volatility. Variable annuities are sold through individual financial advisors, brokerages and financial institutions, and the company also administers closed blocks of fixed annuities, universal life policies and guaranteed investment contracts.

AIG SunAmerica is a subsidiary of AIG Retirement Services and its sister organization, First SunAmerica Life Insurance, which serves New York state. These companies are all under the umbrella of the large insurance conglomerate AIG. However, AIG recently announced that it will sell all of it's U.S. insurance companies, including AIG SunAmerica Life Assurance.

History

AIG SunAmerica's beginnings go back to 1890 when it was called Sun Life of America and provided life insurance services. In 1971, it was acquired by a company called Broad Inc. that is now known as AIG Retirement Services. It wasn't until 1983 that Sun Life of America started to change its focus from insurance to retirement services. After the acquisition of Anchor National Life Insurance Co. in 1986, Sun Life changed its name to AIG SunAmerica. Between 1990 and 1998 the company became the best-performing stock on the New York Stock Exchange for the decade, which preceded a merger with AIG in 1998. Today, AIG SunAmerica provides half a million people with financial products and services aimed at creating economically secure retirement.
