When it's time to buy life insurance, one size does not fit all. There are a myriad of policies types to choose from - some covering the entire life span, others covering only certain aspects (for example stroke insurance and burial insurance). There are many tips you can follow to prevent you from spending your hard-earned money on a policy that might not be the best one for you.

Life insurance falls under two main categories - temporary or "term" insurance, and "permanent" insurance. Term life insurance is the least expensive, because it is taken out for only a limited period of time. Once that coverage period is over, the insurance ends and premiums are not refunded.

Permanent life insurance is more expensive, but your money accrues, and you are able to borrow against it if you so desire. As your life changes, from single to married to married-with-children, to married with children living away from home with their own insurance policies, to retirement, and so on, your life insurance policy needs change.

Keep in Mind

  • You are never too young to buy insurance. The younger and healthier you are, typically the less expensive the premiums.
  • Educate yourself on the many policies offered. Insurance companies sell policies to cover every eventuality; it's just a process of learning what's out there and making informed choices.
  • Shop around for insurance. You want your insurance company to be stable and able to meet its financial responsibilities. Just as multi-million dollar businesses can go bankrupt if poorly managed, so can life insurance companies. So before buying insurance from any company, check out its ratings. Rating companies include Standard & Poors, A.M. Best Company, and Fitch Ratings.
  • Don't be afraid to change or add on to your policies over time. As your life changes, so will your insurance needs.
